About us

Hi, I’m Jake, the founder of San Diego Surf & Sail. My journey with water and adventure started long before landing on the shores of San Diego. I am an Eagle Scout. I graduated from the University of Massachusetts, where I worked as a lifeguard and taught sailing to students and faculty alike. During my time there, I ran the UMass Boston Sailing Team, competing at the collegiate level.

After college, I followed my curiosity and thirst for adventure—cycling from Boston to Key West and back, exploring the Mississippi River by canoe (from source to sea!), and traversing the country again by bicycle from Denver to Marfa, Texas. Along the way, I immersed myself in surfing, sailing, climbing, snowboarding, golf and a lifelong pursuit of connecting with the outdoors.

Eventually, my path led me to San Diego, where I embraced surfing full-time. The process of learning, teaching, and personal growth through surfing captivated me. I spent three years working with a surf school, guiding students in both the technical and mindful aspects of riding waves.

Now, I’ve launched San Diego Surf and Sail to share my passion for intentional surfing, sailing, mindfulness, and ocean safety. My mission is simple: to help students of all levels connect deeply with the ocean, develop confidence, and explore the transformative power of the sea. Whether you’re learning for the first time or seeking a more mindful approach to surfing and sailing, we're here to guide your journey—one wave at a time.
